Well, I'm certainly no expert on the intricacies of urban warfare, but isn't he crouching rather close to that wall to be firing a weapon that has back-blast? I'm guessing that if the shrapnel and fiery explosion didn't hurt him he at least got some burns.

This is misleading. This is only on the PC version of Battlefield 3, on a loaded machine.
Console versions will be nowhere near as nice.
