Survival of the fittest means the species that pops out the most viable offspring is the winner.
So, if you have more babies that produce young themselves, you are the 'fittest'. Or more appropriately 'the most fit'.

survival of the fittest is when you have 2 bugs, one is green and matches his background and one is pink
all the pink ones get eaten because they are noticeable and the green ones survive
so all future bugs from that species are now green because the pink ones died out

wtf nooooo, this is clearly an example of survival of the fittest.
You could argue that the other bison had longer and stronger legs which enabled him to run faster in the snow making him "better adapted for immediate, local environment".
You could also argue that he outsmarted the other bison by tripping him intentionally increasing his odds of reproducing and survival.
The term "survival of the fittest" is a loose term that doesn't always refer to strength or being the fittest but in this case it does because survival of the fittest is a synonym with natural selection according to Darwin. Natural Selection by definition is a genetic variation within the population of organisms (bison) may cause some individuals to survive and reproduce more successfully than others. The other bison was smaller, weaker, whatever, and was killed off because of it. Period.
