Think you're all missing that while the tow truck driver bailed, what happened to the tractor trailer driver? He'd be riding in the cab with the tow truck driver. It's also not rare to see a tow truck driver with a partner, be it a coworker, girlfriend or wife. Lulz.

there was no codriver, however the truckdriver didn't wear a belt and fell out of the truch halfway down, with some nasty scrapes and a broken arm.

This got a lot of coverage on the weather channel, and there actually was a dude in the semi cab. He rode it all the way down and survived afaik.
