Could do it

Density of Iron = 7.86 g/cm3
Density of Mercury = 13.534 g/cm3

That makes 1/2 of density so sticking for
about 50% out of the mercury could be true.

Mercury is twice as dense as Iron, so it floats with half above.
Try a 16 lb bowling ball in water.
