If you're going to get pedantic on this, the Harrier first entered production service for the RAF in 1969 but first flew in 1960. As to whether I'd rather have a bunch of Harriers or an F35, that was never a question. Neither me nor any civilian will ever fly one, so I'd rather have a Learjet 25. A bit more practical, really.
