I'd say he was starting to duck right as it started coming, so he was just reacting quickly to the incoming debris. My assumption is that a shard grazed his helmet just enough to create sparks along contact.

I can't tell whether that 1st soldier (furthest right) was SMART and decided to duck before the others, or he just got hit with something first and that brought him lower.
I think the former but I can't figure out what that flash is on his helmet.
